Radiator Valves

Manual and Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRV)

Whether you’re looking for Thermostatic or Manual radiator valves, we have a broad range of styles and designs available for both radiators and heated towel rails. Valves don’t have to be purely functional, and selecting the right one can really accent the look of your radiator.

BTU Calculator

Use our BTU calculator to easily work out what size radiator you will need, by entering information about your room in our calculator.

Room Information

Enter Room Dimension

BTU calculation result is:

BTU:

From:  -  to:
Tooltip

This indicates the range of output required to heat your room to an appropriate level.

WATT:

From:  -  to:
Tooltip

This indicates the range of output required to heat your room to an appropriate level.

Please note that the calculated figures are a guide - the best way to get an accurate calculation is to employ the services of a plumber. However, our BTU calculator serves as a good guide as to what level of BTU and Watt output will efficiently heat your room. Outdoor temperatures, external walls, insulation, and heated adjacent rooms also all play a part. The boiler should be sufficient to supply all connected radiators to the sum of their maximum demand.

Please remember, that it is also possible to combine radiators to achieve the required BTU level. Many rooms have more than one radiator in them for this very reason. Larger rooms such as Living Rooms generally require more than one radiator positioned evenly throughout the room. If this is the case, divide the required output by the number of radiators needed.

In line with current legislation, all of our outputs are displayed at Delta T50ÂşC to ensure accurate comparisons can be made.

Radiator Valves

A valve is a simple tap that regulates the flow of hot water in and out of the radiator which in turn, changes the temperature of the room.

There are two types of valves that can be used: non-thermostatic (Manual) and thermostatic (TRV).

The TRV controls the radiator's temperature by sensing the temperature of the air in the room, automatically opening and closing the flow to the radiator to maintain a preset temperature.

A manual valve maintains the temperature of the radiator regardless of how warm the room is and requires manual intervention to close.

On a radiator, there are two types of valves that work as a pair, the wheel head for the water inlet (also known as the flow) and the lockshield for the outlet (return).

The wheel head valve is the temperature control; the lockshield valve is used to balance the radiators in the system so that they all heat up at roughly the same rate. Simply put, the radiator closest to the boiler if left unchecked would heat quicker than the one situated at the other end of the house, so the lockshield valves should be set opened at increasing amounts the further away from the boiler the radiator is. For more information, check out our Comprehensive Guide to Radiator Valves.

Thermostatic Valves (TRVs)

The thermostatic valve allows you to automatically regulate the flow of hot water into the radiator. The control inside the valve head will increase or decrease the flow of hot water to the radiator, depending on the ambient room temperature.

This allows you to set the valve to stay open until the temperature you want to reach is achieved, at which point the valve closes. If the temperature then drops, the valve will reopen.

Manual Valves

A manual valve maintains the temperature of the radiator regardless of how warm the room is.

The control of the radiator temperature can be adjusted by hand by turning the valve either up or down.
